Michael Roberts

Associate Attorney

Michael Roberts is an associate in Gibson Dunn’s New York office, where he is a member of the firm’s Privacy, Cybersecurity & Data Innovation practice.

Michael is recognized as a “Rising Star” by Super Lawyers (2020-2024). His practice focuses on matters relating to artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, privacy, emerging technologies, and crisis management. He has a broad range of experience assisting clients with matters before U.S. regulators and agencies, including the CFPB, CFTC, CISA, DOJ, FCC, FINRA, FRBNY, FTC, NYDFS, OCC, SEC, and state attorneys general.

Michael advises companies on managing cybersecurity risks, responding to cybersecurity incidents, and handling related internal investigations and regulatory defense. He also counsels companies on privacy and cybersecurity product, business, and compliance strategies, including with respect to CAN-SPAM, COPPA, FCRA, FERPA, FOIA, FTC Act, GLBA, HIPAA, TCPA, VPPA, and state privacy laws, as well as industry self-regulation on advertising and PCI DSS compliance. Additionally, he assists companies in assessing data-related risks and mitigation strategies on complex transactional matters.

Michael frequently writes on issues related to artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and privacy. He recently served as the managing editor for the Practising Law Institute’s 2023 and 2024 editions of the Privacy Law Answer Book. He has also co-authored articles in the Harvard Law School Forum on Corporate Governance; the NYU Law Compliance & Enforcement Blog; the Columbia Law School Blue Sky Blog; the Cybersecurity Law Report; the American Bar Association’s Infrastructure and Regulated Industries Section; the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Computational Law Report; Pratt’s Privacy & Cybersecurity Law Report; and the Review of Banking & Financial Services.

Michael received his J.D. from New York University School of Law and his MBA from New York University Leonard N. Stern School of Business. At NYU Law, he served as symposium editor of the Annual Survey of American Law. He received his B.A. magna cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania and was awarded the Thomas C. Cochran Prize for the best Honors thesis in American history.

During his dual degree graduate program, Michael completed an internship at the White House in the Office of the Counsel to then-Vice President Joseph R. Biden, Jr., where he helped provide guidance on legal and policy initiatives. He also served as a Law Honors Program Intern at the SEC and as a judicial extern for the Hon. Ronnie Abrams in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York.

Michael serves as a member of the Board of Directors for the New York University School of Law Alumni Association and the Alumni Association Executive Committee for Riverdale Country School. Michael is also an active member of the New York City Bar Association, where he has served on the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee, the Technology, Cybersecurity and Privacy Law Committee, and the Litigation Committee.

Michael is a member of the Bar of the State of New York and is admitted to appear before the Southern District of New York, the Eastern District of New York and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.
