Patrick E. Murray

Associate Attorney

Patrick Murray is a senior litigation associate in the Los Angeles office of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher. He is a member of the Firm’s Intellectual Property, White Collar Defense and Investigations, and Life Sciences practice groups. Patrick represents clients in all facets of complex litigation in federal and state courts, as well as in alternative dispute resolution proceedings. He has drafted and argued successful motions, taken and defended depositions, conducted witness interviews, and managed affirmative discovery. He also provides prelitigation advice on a wide range of complex issues, including on pharmaceutical development agreements, trade secret disputes, and partnership obligations.

Patrick has represented a broad range of clients in significant civil and criminal matters including*:

  • Defended a leading technology company in a patent infringement trial in the Western District of Texas;
  • Helped obtain a favorable settlement for a leading app-based social gaming company in a state-wide consumer class action pending in Washington District Court;
  • Prosecuted a milestone dispute regarding development of a novel cancer therapy on behalf of a clinical-stage bio-pharmaceutical company;
  • Negotiated a civil settlement with no admission of wrongdoing on behalf of an international entertainment company under criminal investigation for an accidental workplace employee death;
  • Drafted a successful motion to dismiss all criminal charges before trial in high-profile public corruption case;
  • Represented a leading consumer electronics company in a first-of-its-kind, multi-district class action lawsuit concerning alleged violations of the Video Privacy Protection Act;
  • Obtained summary judgment dismissing all tort claims brought against a Portland-based private equity firm in a lawsuit brought by a student loan servicer who alleged misappropriation of trade secrets, trademark and service mark infringement, unfair competition, and tortious interference of contract among other claims;
  • Obtained summary judgment dismissing all claims brought against a commercial leaseholder in federal court in Los Angeles, California;
  • Prosecuted a $300 million dollar lawsuit on behalf of a luxury hotel owner and ground lessor in an arbitration trial against an international hotel management company for breach of contract and fiduciary obligations

Patrick also maintains a robust and wide-ranging pro bono practice. In partnership with the San Francisco Public Defender’s Office, he overturned a client’s felony murder conviction after a retrial in San Francisco Superior Court and obtained the client’s release after over 45 years in prison. The following year, Patrick helped exonerate the same client for other serious charges for which he was wrongfully convicted. He has also represented a coalition of residents from the Los Angeles Koreatown neighborhood in a redistricting lawsuit to redress a racially gerrymandered City Council district, and halted deportation proceedings for several indigent minors fleeing gang violence and familial abuse in Central America.

Before joining Gibson Dunn, he worked at a leading trial and litigation boutique in San Francisco, and previously at an AmLaw 50 law firm in Los Angeles. Patrick also served as a law clerk to Chief Judge Virginia A. Phillips of the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California.

Patrick earned his J.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles where he was a Senior Editor of the UCLA Law Review and a member of the UCLA Supreme Court Clinic. Before law school he was a Post-Baccalaureate Fellow at the National Institutes of Health, where he co-authored a peer-reviewed cellular immunology publication. Patrick obtained his B.A. in Biology from Grinnell College.
