Ian Mwiti Mathenge is a corporate associate in the New York office of Gibson, Dunn, and Crutcher.  His practice focuses on  Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG), Capital Markets, Corporate Governance, Securities Regulations, and Mergers and Acquisitions.  Mr. Mathenge is part of the team that advises issuers on complex capital markets deals.

Previously, Mr. Mathenge worked as a litigation lawyer in Kenya arguing cut-edging constitutional, labor, and human rights matters.  He has handled several appeals before the Court of Appeal of Kenya.  In 2021, Mr. Mathenge was one of the youngest lawyers who argued a ground-breaking appeal on the amendments of the Constitution of Kenya popularly known as the BBI Kenya case.  Mr. Mathenge has also written several articles on climate change, human rights, and constitutional law.

Mr. Mathenge holds an LL.M. from Harvard Law School, where he earned the Dean’s Scholar award for the best student in the module the Rise of ESG in Corporate Law & Governance.  At Harvard, Mr. Mathenge was part of the Harvard Human Rights Journal Submissions Committee.  He was also a researcher on the project of writing the Constitution of Chile.

Mr. Mathenge holds a  Bachelor of Laws Degree (LL.B) First Class Honors from the Catholic University of Eastern Africa, where he graduated top of his class and valedictorian of the entire university.  He graduated with a Postgraduate Diploma from Kenya School of Law in Advocates Training Program (bar school studies), where he was recognized for academic excellence and awarded for being the best student in civil litigation.  Mr. Mathenge also holds a Master of Laws (LL.M) in Human Rights and Democratization in Africa with Distinction from University of Pretoria in South Africa.
