BIOGRAPHY

Justine Goeke is a partner in the New York office of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher.  Ms. Goeke represents multinational companies and senior executives across a variety of industries in complex commercial litigation, white collar criminal investigations and litigation, and enforcement actions and investigations by regulatory agencies, including the Department of Justice and the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Ms. Goeke has significant trial and motion practice experience.  She has conducted numerous witness examinations at trials and evidentiary hearings while serving as a key member of multiple successful trial teams.  Representative matters include:

  • Represented a publicly-traded satellite company in a two-week federal court bench trial. Second-chaired the trial and examined a number of crucial witnesses.
  • Successfully defended a Fortune 250 finance company in a high-stakes three-week federal court jury trial, resulting in a complete defense verdict. Second-chaired the trial and examined a key witness.
  • Represented the former CEO of a publicly-traded technology company in an eight-week securities and wire fraud trial in the Southern District of New York. Second-chaired the trial and cross-examined government witnesses.
  • Represented a law firm in an action brought by the firm’s former client. Prevailed on a partial summary judgment motion, resulting in complete withdrawal of the former client’s claims.  Successfully prosecuted the law firm’s counterclaims in a week-long arbitration, and secured a six-figure damages award.  Second-chaired the arbitration and examined a critical witness.
  • Secured complete dismissal of a putative class action lawsuit against Nasdaq in the High-Frequency Trading Litigation filed against U.S. stock exchanges in the Southern District of New York.
  • Represented a New York-based business in CPLR Article 78 proceeding and regulatory agency appeal. Secured restoration of the client’s license to operate after separate multi-day evidentiary hearings.  Second-chaired hearings and examined witness.
  • Secured summary judgment for a healthcare technology company in a breach of contract dispute in the Southern District of New York.
  • Obtained complete dismissal on the pleadings of a breach of contract lawsuit filed in New York (Commercial Division) concerning the purchase of a multi-unit property in Texas.
  • Represented industry-leading investment banking firm in separate Securities and Exchange Commission and Department of Justice investigations.
  • Represented an executive in connection with Clean Water Act investigation conducted by the Department of Justice.

Ms. Goeke has lectured at the New York City Bar Association regarding effective district court advocacy and for Lawline regarding the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure.  She has conducted compliance training for an investment banking firm regarding understanding and preventing insider trading, and has presented CLE classes on effective cross examination and developing third-party witnesses for trial.  Most recently, Ms. Goeke has been named as “Ones to Watch” by Best Lawyers in appellate practice for 2023.

Ms. Goeke maintains an active pro bono practice that includes impact litigation regarding police brutality and conditions of criminal detention.  She secured a favorable five-figure settlement from the City of New York on behalf of a former detainee at Rikers Island for violations of his constitutional rights.  She has successfully assisted New Yorkers in obtaining asylum and securing public housing repairs from the New York City Housing Authority.

Ms. Goeke is a member of the board of directors of Unique People Services, a non-profit focused on providing transitional and supportive housing to people with mental illness and developmental disabilities.

Prior to joining Gibson Dunn, Ms. Goeke served as a law clerk to the Honorable Ann M. Donnelly in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York and to the Honorable D. Brock Hornby in the United States District Court for the District of Maine.

Ms. Goeke graduated in 2013 from Harvard Law School, where she was a student advocate and Secretary-Treasurer for the Harvard Legal Aid Bureau, and a finalist in the National Criminal Justice Trial Advocacy Competition.  She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota, where she graduated magna cum laude and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa.

Ms. Goeke is admitted to practice in the State of New York, and before the United States District Courts for the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York.
