Matthew Breen

Associate Attorney

Matthew Breen is an associate in the New York office of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP where he practices with the firm’s Business Restructuring and Reorganization Practice Group. His practice focuses on representing debtors and creditors in in-court and out-of-court restructurings.

On the creditor side, Mr. Breen’s recent engagements include representing ad hoc groups of secured lenders in the chapter 11 cases of Endo International plc, global specialty biopharmaceutical business; Diamond Sports Group, LLC, leading provider of local sports programming in the United States; Venator Materials PLC, global manufacturer of titanium dioxide; and an operator of Mexican powerplants.* In addition, Mr. Breen has represented a group of federally qualified health centers in connection with the Title III cases of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico and certain of its instrumentalities;* the Official Committee of Unsecured Creditors in the chapter 11 proceedings of a leading global operator of offshore drilling rigs;* the DIP Lender in the chapter 11, sub-chapter V, proceedings of Arsenal Intermediate Holdings, LLC, captive insurer; and a secured creditor in the chapter 11, sub-chapter V, proceedings of a medical device manufacturer.*

Mr. Breen’s recent company-side engagements include representing a leading oil and gas exploration and production company in the Eagle Ford Shale* and an internet backbone and telecommunications company* in connection with their respective chapter 11 proceedings. He has also represented the foreign representatives to an international airline in their chapter 15 proceedings;* a medical lab testing company in their out-of-court recapitalization via strict foreclosure;* and a leading provider of non-financial risk management services and defense contracting in its out-of-court recapitalization.*

Prior to joining Gibson Dunn, Mr. Breen served as a law clerk for The Honorable J. Kate Stickles of the United States Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware from 2021 through 2022 and as an associate in the Financial Restructuring Group of Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP. He received his B.S. in Economics and Finance magna cum laude from Florida State University and received his J.D. with honors from Emory University School of Law. During law school, he interned for the United States Attorney for the District of Columbia and externed in the office of the general counsel for Novelis Inc., the world’s largest producer of rolled aluminum sheet.
