BIOGRAPHY

Ben Betner is an associate in the Houston office of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP.  He is a member of the Firm’s Litigation Department and has advised and represented clients in state and federal court proceedings in a wide range of subject matters, including energy, technology, financial services, and admiralty. He has also represented clients in front of most of the major international arbitral institutions.

Representative Matters*

  • Represented a major oil and gas company in a construction dispute involving breach of contract and fraud claims related to the design and build of a first-of its kind water treatment facility.
  • Member of trial team that won a complete defense award for the owner of a midstream bulk liquids terminal after a three week arbitration against the former operator of the terminal alleging wrongful termination.
  • Represented commodities trading firm in an admiralty proceeding in the Southern District of New York over termination of a transportation agreement.
  • Defended breach of warranty claims against a leading life-sciences company over alleged equipment and software defects.
  • Represented a foreign state-owned entity in dispute against a private company involving the removal of a sunken bulk-oil tanker as part of a terminal expansion project.
  • Represented a major oil and gas company in a breach of contract arbitration arising from oil and gas interests in Papua New Guinea.

Prior to joining the firm, Ben was an associate at Vinson & Elkins LLP, where he focused his practice on complex commercial litigation.

He received his law degree, with honors, from the University of Texas at Austin School of Law, where he was selected as a Brumley Fellow in National Security Law and served as the Deputy Managing Editor for the Texas Review of Law and Politics.

Prior to practicing law, Ben served in the U.S. Army, working in Military Intelligence, and deployed to both Afghanistan and Iraq.

He is a member of the State Bar of Texas and is admitted to practice before the U.S. District Courts in the Southern, Eastern, and Western Districts of Texas.
